Socio-economic and cultural determinants of zoonotic transmission risk practices around the Lomami National Park (DRC)

Abstract

Introduction: Close contact between local communities and wildlife is a major factor in zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to analyze the socio-economic and cultural determinants influencing risk behaviors in the bushmeat value chain around the Lomami National Park.

Methods: A qualitative approach based on the One Health framework was conducted with 322 actors in the bushmeat value chain (hunters, transporters, sellers, consumers, community leaders). The data were collected thru in-depth individual interviews, focus groups, community mapping, and direct observations.

Results: The main determinants identified are poverty, low education levels, and cultural beliefs that value bushmeat for its taste and therapeutic properties. The lack of knowledge about zoonoses increases the adoption of risky practices such as the consumption of animals found dead or sick.

Conclusion: Precarious socio-economic conditions and cultural representations reinforce risky behaviors. Awareness strategies adapted to the local context are necessary to reduce the vulnerability of communities.
